Monstera plants, also known as Swiss cheese plants, are a popular tropical houseplants known for their large, glassy leaves with unique and distinctive natural leaf holes. Native to the rainforest of Central and Southern America, the big bold and beautiful Monstera plant is a favourite for all indoor plant enthusiasts. An easy-to-grow evergreen houseplant that can be found in many interior design spaces giving the WOW factor.

Monstera plants belong to the Araceae family. These plants are renowned for their attractive foliage, which adds a touch of tropical beauty to any space. Monstera leaves are typically large and heart shaped, growing up to several feet in size. Their unique natural holes give them their nickname Swiss Cheese Plant.

Monstera plants are natural climbers and use their aerial roots to attach themselves to trees in their native habitat. Inside the Monstera can be trained to trail down as a hanging plant or also climb up supports. Like many plants Monstera are naturally air purifying, helping to remove toxins from the air and release oxygen.

How to look after your Monstera

Monstera plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves so make sure not to keep your Monstera plant directly next to the window. Monstera plants can thrive for many years with just the right amount of attention. Whilst most people grow Monstera plants indoors some people in Qatar have managed to also grow their Monstera plants outside in a humid environment.

As mentioned Monstera plants need full light all day to be able to grow to their full potential. Make sure to have a moss pole or stake that will support your Monstera plant so that it can grow to become a beautiful tall bush plant.

Watering your Monstera Plant

In terms of watering, the Monstera plant prefers for its soil to dry out a little bit before watering. Make sure that you do not over water your Monstera plant. Water your plant when the top inch of the soil feels dry. You can test this by just placing your index finger into the soil. If your finger comes out dry then you need to water your plant.

Water your outdoor Monstera everyday and make sure to also spray the leaves to replicate humidity. Monstera grown inside water once a week. Your plant may also appreciate a light misting once a week to replicate the humid environment it is known to.
Jasmine plants will benefit from normal room humidity. However, they will benefit from high humidity and produce more flowers.

Caring for your Monstera plant

Regularly remove any yellow or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy and attractive. Maintaining good, light, watering practice and fertilisation will ensure your Monstera will produce many more beautiful leaves and bring joy to the surroundings.

Fertilise your Monstera once a month during the growing season using a balanced, water soluble fertiliser. Follow the instructions of the fertiliser package for the correct dosage.
